Chris Stoop —

Recently some senior students completed their adventurous activity training for their Gold and Silver awards.

Riccarton High is now combining with Burnside High, under the guidance of Andrew Smythe, Bushworks NZ Ltd. This is in response to the Mountain Safety Council disbanding in New Zealand. Our advanced trainings will now use Bushworks as the key provider. Andrew is a fully qualified outdoor leader and a chemistry teacher at Burnside.

Andrew likes to extend the students! Anny Na 12BU and Panmai Kernkhunthot 12SN tramped through snow at night , and although cold, it was a rare experience for these two, and they successfully completed their practice tramp for Silver. Sophie Madsen 13RV extended her Gold skills using a compass and map to find not only the track, but also a “lost” tramper who had been hidden away in the bush.

All three students really enjoyed their training and practice tramps. If you are keen to get your tramp completed this year, a Bronze expedition will be going to Peel Forest first weekend back next term.

See Ms Jermy or Mrs Stoop if you are interested.
