Cook Island Language Week

We celebrated the Cook Island language week from Sunday 30 July to Saturday 5 August. The theme this year was 'Ātuitui’ia au ki te au peu o tōku kāinga Ipukarea', which means, 'connect me to the traditions & culture of my homeland'.

The fabulous RHS Pasifika team ran multiple activities. The traditional Turou is a pe’e by the warriors with the sound of the conch and drums - welcoming our principal, Mr Neil Hayward, our staff and students. We were treated to fabulous entertainment, with the Cook Islands drum dance from our students and teachers and our students also participated in the Cook Islands ‘ura’ dance as well. To complete the celebration, Cook Islands kai was on the menu and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Meitaki maata to the Cook Islands students who, with with the support of their Pasifika students, were instrumental in organising the celebration.

Fagasa Samoa speech competition

The Fagasa Samoa Speech Competition was successfully held on August 10, 2023, in Christchurch. This competition is dedicated to students of Samoan heritage, spanning from year levels 5 to 13. It is with great pleasure that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sili Manu, a Year 11 student, for achieving the prestigious first place award. In addition, we would also like to congratulate Tina Manu, an outstanding Year 9 student, for her exceptional performance and deserving second place recognition in the competition.

Afghan culture club

The Afghan Culture Club meets every Tuesday during lunchtime in Room L7, providing an opportunity for students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Afghan culture and traditions. We are excited that several students from Te Kapehu Riccarton School have also joined the club for Term 3.

This term, the club will be focusing on exploring traditional food and sports. We would love for you to attend if you are interested in participating in these enriching activities.
