Kī-o-rahi Tournament

Logan Lemon —

Kī-o-rahi is a traditional Māori game that is growing in popularity through High Schools around New Zealand with its high paced, action-packed quarters involving aspects of touch, football and ultimate frisbee.

Riccarton High School had two teams participate in an invitational tournament held at Ara Institute of Canterbury on Friday 24th July.

The tournament was in celebration of Matariki and students enjoyed the celebration by sharing experiences and culture through the sport.

Our teams competed positively and with success against teams from all over Christchurch with both teams making the semi-finals.

They were defeated by Hagley and Lincoln, with Lincoln winning the final.

A big highlight of the tournament was the semi-final against Lincoln who are the South Island Champs.

Last year Lincoln beat us 44-7. This year saw a hug improvement with a close loss of 13-8. A big congratulations go to our two Riccarton MVP’s Madi McLaren and Logan Lemon.

After such a great experience the teams are really looking forward to the next tournament which will be held at the end of term 3.
