Spirit of Adventure

Nathan Hyde (11TN) —

Hi my name’s Nathan Hyde, I’m the Board of Trustees student representative and I’m going to share with you the experiences I had whilst on board the Spirit of Adventure Voyage from the 18-22 January.

I left Christchurch and flew to Auckland then proceeded to board the Spirit of Adventure where I met forty other student representatives from all around New Zealand.

Over the next five days I did numerous activities which helped develop my team building skills and better introduce me to being a student representative.

Every morning I would wake up at 6:00 in the morning and then head up to the deck of the ship and jump off into the freezing cold water.

Next I’d listen to the staff then meet my organized group and prepare for whichever activities were happening on that day.

My particular favourite activity was using oars as a team in a raft in order to get from the boat to numerous locations on land.

Other activities including things such as putting up and taking down the masts by climbing them, in windy and rocky conditions of course, helping out in the kitchen and around the boat, attending lessons to learn how to properly use skills acquired on the trip in board of trustees meetings, all while conversing and networking with each other.

Once the day's activities were concluded students met below deck where we ate and played games organized by the staff.

Each day provided interesting and new challenges for me and my group to overcome and learn from. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and learning skills which will help me in both the board of trustees meetings and in life.

I recommend this voyage to anyone who has this opportunity as it makes life long memories and friendships while teaching you about yourself and making you a more confident and rounded individual.
