Student Success - 'Dance NZ Made Competition'

Courtney Robinson —

On Tuesday the 9th of August, 37 RHS dancers and I headed over to Burnside High School for an awesome day at the Aurora Center joining other schools from Christchurch and further afield.

The day started with rehearsals and workshops with the judges until 3.00pm, then it was time to get ready for the competition! RHS had five teams participating in the competition which started at 6.00pm and concluded just before 9.00pm. No doubt parents and caregivers had tired dancers on Wednesday!

The highlight of the event was Jimmy Ruan and Daniel McLaughlin receiving 'Golden Tickets' at the prize giving. This means they were hand selected by the judges during their workshops to attend an invitation-only event later in the year in which they could receive $1000 toward future dance tuition.

Everyone at to competition was particularly impressed with the speed and precision at which Jimmy picked up choreography and stepped up to lead the wee Year 3-6's in the finale number practice.

Manik at NZCAF

Saturday 06 August was a big day for RHS Manik dance crew at NZCAF which is one of the big hip-hop competitions that have regionals around New Zealand.

Heats went okay but our dancers came off stage saying they could do better. However, when they greeted me after their finals performance they were fizzing! So much more energy, precision and passion.

Their efforts garnered them some shiny 3rd place medals!

This crew includes Jedh Babatio, Holly O'Farrell, Brooke Mathie, Zoe Mathie, Scarlet Wright (crew leader), Amrita Rawat, Aleisha Smith and Maisie Phillips.
