Noho Orohaki - a leadership opportunity

Base Walker —

Last year’s Filipino student camp was such a huge success, so this year it was extended to a multicultural camp combining three culture groups: Chinese, Filipino and Pasifka students.

Part one:

As part of a two day programme, students arrived on Friday 17th of September and left the following afternoon. The purpose of this multicultural camp was to build up students' confidence and further develop potential leaders at Riccarton High School.

Students looked at how the Riccarton Way could apply in their own culture, what is leadership, leadership in different cultures, identifying what culture and community is and leadership in action. In addition, there were also different cultural icebreakers run by student leaders, entertaining performances and lots of delicious multicultural food.

Part two:

The following day, Year 12 students arrived on the bus. We combined with the multicultural students and split into mixed groups to learn more about leadership. All the activities, food and icebreakers were designed by the Year 12 Noho Orohaki student organizing team, led by Ms Eaton. We all did six different workshops that were run by teachers from our school as well as the current head students and prefects. Workshops included Q & A sessions around how current prefects balance school while working hard on their roles, how is the Riccarton Way applied in leadership, teamwork, communication games, etc. The aim was to ensure more people understand what a leader is and what is required to be a leader, as well as building students confidence and developing potential leaders. Noho Orohaki finished on Sunday afternoon after we spent time with past Riccarton student leaders.

An absolute highlight of Noho Orohaki was the lunch we all shared together on Saturday. It was fried rice, chop suey, with quail egg and shrimp noodles. So delicious.

A very big thank you to all the teachers and support staff who came out to be with us and teach us. Finally, Orohaki is a very special place and I hope many more will get to enjoy the leadership opportunity that we did.
