Elaine P Snowden Astronomy School

Francesca Zhang (13CS) —

In the April holidays, Francesca Zhang got the opportunity to attend the Elaine P. Snowden Astronomy school - a week-long camp organised by the University of Canterbury to inspire Year 12 and 13 students who excel in science to study astronomy.

Fully funded by a generous donor, Michael Snowden, the camp gave me the chance to experience what UC has to offer, do some cool science, and get to know a fun group of people.

The camp was based at the Rochester and Rutherford Hall at the University of Canterbury, and the first couple of days were spent listening to some interesting lectures, participating in labs, and touring the University.

Towards the middle of the week, the group set off on a road trip to Lake Tekapo, to visit the famous UC Mt John Observatory. I can proudly say I know how to manoeuvre a telescope on an equatorial mount!

We didn’t just spend our time stargazing, however (although we did stay up pretty late)—we also took a walk up the Hooker Valley (Mt Cook), learning about the glacial formation of the region and experiencing some stunning scenery. All in all, I would say going down to Tekapo was the best part of the camp.

What made the camp incredible overall was getting to meet such a diverse, interesting, and hilarious group of people. The other students on the trip all had their own passions and quirks and getting to know them was so much fun.

To any Year 11 or 12 student who is passionate about science, or who just wants to explore their interest in it more, I would highly recommend applying for Astronomy School next year. You get to talk to current university students doing a Bachelor of Science about their studies, which I found really helpful.

You also get to experience what it’s like studying science (specifically astronomy) at UC—and even if astronomy isn’t your thing, I guarantee you’ll still learn a thing or two. Most importantly, you get to have an awesome time with like-minded people! I know I found the experience valuable, so I hope others are encouraged to take the opportunity!
