"Eat NZ Hui"

Alex Schwass —

Level 3 Hospitality students were an integral component of the #EatNZ Hui which was held at the beginning of May in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.

Eat NZ is a New Zealand food movement dedicated to connecting people to the land, through our food. Eat New Zealand is the leading cross-sector organisation committed to telling the Aotearoa Food Story. They work towards creating a platform that encourages and enables collaboration between all levels of the culinary chain and moves toward more regenerative food systems. They do this by helping build stronger, more resilient food communities, increasing our unique culinary credentials and making New Zealand the world’s premium food destination.

The Eat NZ National Hui is a hugely important event, as it brings people together from across all aspects of food in Aotearoa. It's about connecting with each other and celebrating our food and our food stories, while providing a space to share learnings, challenges and opportunities from throughout our food system.

Eat New Zealand is a movement initiated by chefs and people in the business of food with the aim of highlighting the quality and vast array of edible resources available in New Zealand. Riccarton High School represented and smashed it!  Our rangatahi were enthusiastic and competent helpers to chef Jonny Schwass as they catered and served over 100 guests over two days.

The theme for the two-day event was using locally rescued food which created an opportunity to take food that may have been misshapen or unwanted by supermarkets and turned into something edible and nutritious. It was a task that the students relished and all who were in attendance commented that our students modelled the Riccarton Way values of Manaakitanga, Manawanui, Ngākaupono and Kairangi to the highest levels.
