Safety over convenience and parking etiquette for students

RHS Administration —

An important reminder for anyone dropping off and/or picking up students from Riccarton High School.

ARRIVING AT AND LEAVING SCHOOL EACH DAY:

There are two access gates to our school, Main South Road (next to the Upper Riccarton Library), and Vicki Street (off Curletts Road). Both of these roads are extremely busy and can be dangerous. Fortunately, there are pedestrian crossings with traffic lights on both roads. We are quite concerned that a number of parents are driving through the school grounds to drop-off and pick-up their children. With over 1000 students entering the school each day we are aware of the substantial potential for an accident. We have also witnessed a few instances of vehicles pulling up and parking on the yellow lines by the gates. This has resulted in a couple of 'near misses'.  We specifically ask that parents do not use the Main South Road driveway, any areas where there are yellow lines, or the library carpark as a drop-off or pick-up point, or drive onto the school grounds through the main gate (entered from Vicki Street).

Appropriate places to drop-off or pick-up students off are:

  • Craven Street or Colman Avenue - students can use the controlled pedestrian crossing on Main South Road
  • Vicki Street - outside the school gates, away from the yellow lines
  • Suva Street - students can use the controlled pedestrian crossing on Curletts Road

Bike stands are available to those students who require them. It is essential that all bikes are locked with a quality lock. Safe storage for scooters and skateboards is provided at Student Services. Students must park cars in the side streets. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their young person is driven to school by someone with an appropriate driver’s licence.

STUDENT PARKING:

Many of our students park on the streets around school e.g. Colman Avenue, and some students are parking over people's driveways.

Please give yourself plenty of time to find a suitable car park in the mornings and still have time to walk a block or two to school.

We ask that our students please park properly and leave a 1-meter distance between the end of your car and the edge of the driveway, as stated in the New Zealand road rules. It is important that you park correctly so residents and any emergency vehicles have full access to their properties. Also, getting a ticket or having your vehicle towed for poor parking will be a costly and frustrating experience for you.

We thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our community safe.
