School and Community Partnerships in the Hard Materials Workshop

Andrew Regaldo —

As a number of our students have been developing projects that involve intricate work that the workshop doesn’t have the facilities to accomplish, we have approached companies in the community to help us out. These companies have opened their doors to our students, in some cases allowing them to learn onsite.

One such case is Christiana O’Connor in Year 13, who is making a suitcase-come-work table, and needed some aluminium welding done on pipework. We contacted Hamilton Jets Marine Division, who were more than willing to help Christiana with her project. Colin, who works for Hamilton Jet, took time to teach Christiana how to Tig Weld the aluminium. He then went on to weld the tubes for her because it was an advanced welding technique.

Another company that has been helping us out over the past few years is R A Hale Ltd, who we have used to machine table tops and precise angled cuts which again we were unable to achieve accurately enough with our equipment. Don and Chris who work at R A Hale Ltd, have been willing to assist us at short notice, which allows the students to get their project done within the required time frame.

Other companies who have been willing to assist the students in their project work are: UniWeld who are neighbours on Main South Road, Mercer Stainless on Lunns Road, Alsop Joinery on Alloy Street. All these companies are in our school's community and volunteer their time to assist our students.
