Kohanga Ako – Athletics Day

Tanya Bennett —

On the 1st of November Kohanga Ako attended the Christchurch Special Olympics Athletics Day at Rawhiti Domain. While the sun decided not to turn out a great day was had by all and Riccarton High School well very well represented.

Students compete in three events and have to have a mix of field and track.

Some of our students warmed up with the 800m, with solid 5th and 7th placements and others competed in the popular softball throw.

Our senior boys performed well in the 100m races, taking 1st and 2nd placements convincingly, despite the tough competition.

The Riccarton Way attitude was seen throughout the day, with plenty of encouragement for our team as well as support for students from other schools.

It was great to see Kohanga Ako students taking on a personal challenge, whether it be to participate in a running event or to push themselves to gain a personal best.

A big thanks to Natalie Bell for athletic skills development during Physical Education lessons and to the Sports Office for fitting out our team with tracksuits and shelter.
