Lou Heenan & Jane Hall —

Term three is often a busy month for senior students especially those in Year 13 who are finalising their plans for when they leave school.

A letter has been emailed to all parents of Year 13 students, providing them with information regarding the support services available and highlighting key dates and events that they should be mindful of. We urge parents to regularly visit the careers website at https://riccarton.careerwise.school/ to stay updated on all upcoming events and relevant dates.

Guest speakers
On Thursday, July 20th, professionals from Te Whatu Ora and the New Zealand Police visited our school to share their career pathways with our students. Henri Nelis from Te Whatu Ora gave informative and inspiring presentations to both senior and junior classes about the field of Medical Imaging (Radiography). He provided a comprehensive overview of the origins of Medical Imaging and engaged the students with images, challenging them to identify potential medical issues.

Henri Nelis - Medical imaging discussion.

During lunchtime, Rawdon and Lucy from the New Zealand Police chatted with our students about a career in law enforcement. They showcased some of the tools they carry on a daily basis, and one fortunate student even had the opportunity to sit in their police car. Hosting professionals like Henri, Rawdon, and Lucy is invaluable in providing our students with firsthand knowledge and exposure to various careers. We extend our gratitude to them for generously dedicating their time to speak with our students.

Hagley College Pre-Professional Courses
Staff from the Careers Department recently attended a breakfast at Hagley College where the Pre-Professional programmes they offer were showcased. It was great to see an ex-student, Quinn McConnell talking passionately about the Early Childhood teaching course he is doing there. Pre-Professional courses are a next step beyond school to prepare students for entry in a variety of professional and tertiary programmes.

Just Group Visit
On Tuesday, August 15th, a representative from the Just Group, a conglomerate of retail outlets including Just Jeans, Portmans, Jacqui E, Smiggle, Dotti, and Peter Alexander, visited Riccarton High School to share information with our students about potential part-time and holiday employment opportunities. During the visit, students were provided with valuable information on how to access and explore the various job vacancies that might arise within the Just Group at any given time. This wonderful initiative is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and resources to pursue employment within these well-known retail establishments.
