Level 2 Physics flight

Joshua Daglish —

On the last day of October, a group of lucky level 2 students from both Physics classes got the opportunity to have an educational flight over Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour.

In groups of three we went up in a plane with an experienced pilot and got the opportunity to see fantastic views over the Garden city, which lead to everybody taking photos to savour this experience.

As this was an educational flight as well it wasn’t complete without a physics lesson from the pilot about how the plane turns, controlled stalls that made us feel weightless and sharp turns around Lyttelton Harbour that made us feel the effects of Earth’s gravity if it was doubled. He went on to talk about the mechanics of flight and the people in the front seat even got the chance to fly the plane, yes you heard correct!

Overall the flight was an amazing experience that we will remember as one of the highlights at Riccarton High School, and we would like to thank the physics teachers: Miss Trott, Mrs Vercoe and Mrs Napier for making this wonderful day happen.
