RHS Sports - Term 1 in Review

RHS Sports, Angus Gourlay, Jena Johnston —

Term 1 has been both busy and rewarding for our RHS sports stars.

RHS Volleyball

We had four volleyball teams compete in the South Island Satellite Championships during Summer Tournament Week. Our two Senior B teams (boys and girls) competed in Division II and competed to a very high level against all the teams they encountered, improving greatly over the week. Nearly all sets played by our Senior B team were super close in scores to the other teams but unfortunately we just couldn't quite get the win. Both teams had some really exciting 5-set matches with the Senior B girls getting a win against Hornby in the final and the Senior B Boys just losing in 5 sets to Burnside B, who ended up winning Division 2.

Our Senior A teams had an excellent week and their hard work during a COVID-19 disrupted season really paid off. Both teams made it through to the semi finals, only dropping the one match in pool play to Cashmere, who were eventual finalists in both the boys and girls grades. Unfortunately, both teams lost in their semi finals but bounced back to get a win in the 3rd place match ups to take home a bronze!

A massive shout out and thank you to all the coaches that helped out throughout the entire week to make this event happen.

Term 1 Summer Korfball 2022

Term 1 has been very exciting and has held lots of promise for the growth of Korfball at Riccarton High School. This is the first year we have had a Senior and a Junior team playing in the Secondary Schools Korfball Championships. During this season of Korfball, we have witnessed so much passion and effort put into developing skills and working as a team. Even with the restrictions and interruptions, COVID-19 has not managed to dampen our teams spirit and enthusiasm.

We are excited to be able to have parents supporting us at games again and look forward to the improvements of our players over the Winter Season!

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

On the Wednesday of Summer Tournament Week, the Senior Frisbee team competed at the South Island Secondary School Championships at Hagley Park. We played three games throughout the day where we beat Darfield in pool play and then ended up going down to Shirley Boys High School in the final.

Both Most Valuable player and Most Sportsman Like Player of the tournament were taken out by Riccarton High School, John Abadecio winning MVP and Zane Yates winning MSP.

All the players had a great time and played exceptionally well. Thank you to Richard Fernando who coached us all season and to Mr Paewai for managing the teams!
