South Island Junior Volleyball Champs

Chris Nielson —

RHS took both a girls team and a boys team to this years South Island junior volleyball champs. With both teams playing seven games over three days and two travel days included, it was a busy and fast-paced week for everyone involved.

The girls started strongly and even though they were up against some very tough opposition, they were right in the fight in every match. Day 2 saw success with exciting wins over Otago Girls High School and Burnside High School. Our girls finished the tournament 12th in Division 1 and all had a positive and fun week both on and off the court.

Our boys went into the tournament as top seeds after winning the Canterbury Junior Champs a fortnight prior. We cleaned up our three pool games 2-0, and moved into the top eight where the competition becomes tougher.

We went through the post section with three wins, having to play our absolute best volleyball to stay on top. We were rewarded with a place in the semi-finals where we came up against Kings High School. This was a closely contested battle which we won in the decider, 26-24. The final against Burnside High School was another nail-biter. We narrowly won the first set then dropped the second set. However, a good start in the third set along with some tough serving kept us in the lead to win the deciding set 25-19.

Coach Joe Baxter made critical decisions during the game to help the boys stay focused and on top.

Congratulations to the three boys who made the Tournament team. R J Malanac, Apete Rokosuka and Alan Hodder. Alan was also named as the M.V.P. of the tournament.

Congratulations to both of our teams for an excellent week away.
