Kia ora from the Careers Department at Riccarton High School
We have had a busy and inspiring term 2, with students making the most of the wonderful opportunities that have been provided to them.
Te
Rā Tūhura/UC Discovery Day 2023
On Thursday 08 June, 50 Year 12 students attended Te Rā Tūhura/UC Discovery Day at the University of Canterbury. During this day students were able to attend lectures in subjects they might be considering studying at university and were able to explore the university campus and all it has to offer.
This is a full-on day for our ākonga as students from all Christchurch schools attend this event which creates an environment that simulates how busy the campus is on a daily basis. The opportunity to attend a lecture in one of the many lecture theatres is another valuable experience for students as this highlights to them one of the major differences between studying at school and studying at university.
Otago University D.A.R.E (Dream, Achieve, Research, Engage) Programme
On Thursday 22 June, eight Year 12 and 13 students joined students from other Christchurch schools and attended the D.A.R.E. Programme at the Otago University Campus in Christchurch. This programme is for students who are looking to pursue a career in Health Sciences.
Students got the opportunity to
hear from tertiary students who are currently studying health related careers
like Physiotherapy, Medicine, Nursing (Master’s Programme) and many other science
fields. Students were also able to interact on a one-on-one basis with other
health professionals learning first hand what a career in a particular field might
entail.
Komatsu Apprentice Programme
Early this term Mrs Jane Hall and two senior students visited the Komatsu Hub for Christchurch to ascertain what apprenticeship opportunities are available for school leavers. Students were able to talk directly with Komatsu staff as well as current apprentices who are at various stages through their four-year apprenticeship programme. They also got to explore the workshop and look at a wide range of the machinery that Komatsu have. Both students enjoyed the visit and are planning on exploring future opportunities with Komatsu.
Taster Days at Ara | Te Pukenga
This term we have had a number of students attend taster days at Ara | Te Pukenga which has allowed them to try out a particular course for a day. It has been great to see how motivated students are when they return to school.
First Aid Courses
During the July school holidays, 40 Year 13 students will be attending a comprehensive first aid course with the Red Cross. This certificate is sometimes a prerequisite for certain tertiary courses, is a great addition to any CV and lasts for two years.
The course will be offered to Year 13 students again in 2024 but if any other students need a first aid course for a full-time tertiary course or part-time job, then please let the Careers Department know and we will arrange for you to attend a public course.
Employment Opportunities
Employers contact the Careers Department on a regular basis looking for school leavers. Please check riccarton.careerwise.school for more information or pop to the Career Department for a chat. We would love to help.
