We have been fortunate to be able to arrange for the St John New Zealand Community Education Team to come to our school in November to train all of our Year 9 and 10 students in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

CPR is an important first aid technique to know as it can save someone’s life. It is a manual method of pumping blood around a person’s body when they have suffered from a cardiac arrest – which simply means the heart has stopped functioning. CPR is not designed to restart the heart but rather to keep blood pumping so that heart and brain cells do not die due to lack of oxygen while waiting for professional medical help to arrive. The one-hour sessions will take place at school during a timetabled class period between Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 November. Students will attend the training with their whānau class and one of their teachers. We have been able to join a pilot programme for this year which means there is no cost to the students (or the school) for this training.
