Parents' Work Day

Rebecca Nicholson —

A wonderful group of 35 parents and staff came together on the 2nd of April to do some projects for the school - from gardening and landscaping, to organising props for the drama department and equipment for the outdoor education programme, painting classrooms and corridors, and installing new shelving and cupboard doors.

It was an enjoyable day and a wonderful opportunity for parents to get together, meet new people (including some of the staff of Riccarton High School) and give something back by helping out.

And a big thank you to all the parents who brought in delicious baking for the morning tea as well – scones, carrot cake, savouries, muffins, brownies, the list goes on! There was a fantastic spread and lots for people to take home for afternoon tea as well.

Gardening

Lyn Petch, Rachelle Martin and Morgan Coleman also did some gardening for us – and tidied up an area under one of the large oak trees by removing bricks that were a trip hazard and replacing them with bark.

New Doors in Hall

Storage doors for the area under the sound booth in the hall were very kindly made and installed by Neville Bates (of Bates Builders) and Don Bisphan (of R A Hale Joinery). This will enable the area to become a secure storage area for the Kohanga Ako bikes.

New Shelves in Food Tech

New white, melamine shelves made and installed by Don Bisphan and Neville Bates – to give the food technology room more storage for food, tea towels, etc.

Organising Outdoor Equipment

This group sorted all the outdoor equipment, got rid of old stuff and neatly packed all the gear in its new storage area in the garage.

Organising Props Container

The performing arts and art departments now have a container specifically for storage for their equipment, props, sets, etc. This was able to be clearly stored and is now easily accessible in the one area for staff and students to access.

Painting G/H corridor

A dark corridor was lightened up by having the walls painted a light grey (from the previous dark blue/green).

Gary Churcher (a gib stopper and painter) also expertly tidied up the wall in the hall where a new kitchen bench was installed and an old one removed.

Painting P7 ceiling

Paul Bridgman, Angela Meiritz-Reid and Mark Syme are freshening up this classroom with a coat of paint on the ceiling.

Vans Cleaned

Emma Don, her husband Aidan and their little helper Henry also came along and cleaned all three of the school vans, inside and out.

Thanks to you all we got some wonderful projects done – and to those who couldn’t make but brought us some baking – a fantastic morning tea.
