Brain Bee Competition 2018

Nikki Conyers —

In week 9 of Term 2, a team of four Year 11 students: Jorja Dowty, Ziad Abdelmaksoud, Jack Rutherford and Jessica Yu travelled down to Dunedin to take part in the 2018 Brain Bee Competition at Otago University.

These students had won their place on this competition by learning a huge amount of information about the brain and gaining a fantastic score in the individual round 1 on the computers.

With help from Lyn Young (Year12), these students met and trained every Wednesday to prepare for the competition.

As part of the experience, the students visited the microscopy labs and anatomy museum at the university, and also got to spend a lot of time at Otago Museum. In fact, we all spent the night sleeping on the floor of the Science museum!

The students did so well during the competition, with Jorja and Ziad both making the finals.

There were not many other schools from Canterbury who had multiple students representing them in the finals.

Although Riccarton did not place, the students represented Riccarton High School proudly and have created many wonderful memories along the way. Ka Pai!
