Mixx South Island Secondary School Korfball Tournament

On the weekend of 17th and 18th September the Senior Korfball team went to the South Island secondary schools tournament at pioneer stadium. The Senior team had a great weekend, mainly full of success, winning 3 out of 6 of our games, drawing one, and unfortunately losing 2.

The team played amazingly during the weekend, we all learned a lot about gameplay since we played a lot of tough teams who had a lot more experience than we have all had, ones we have played before and others we have never met on court. We ended up coming 11th in the tournament, which wasn’t the result we were aiming towards but was still good.

Overall it was an awesome experience and we all look forward to representing Riccarton again in the future. - Alyssa Bartlett.

Rock Climbing - South Islands

On the 1st and 2nd of September, Riccarton took 3 teams to the 2022 South Island Indoor Climbing Competition. Our teams learned a lot over the two days of competition and we came out of it with a lot more knowledge of climbing.

Particularly as this competition has been cancelled in previous years, the turnout was massive so it ended up an even better experience than we expected. For newer members (most people had never competed before at all), the numbers were pretty daunting, but each team climbed well, and with good sportsmanship. Although we ended up exhausted at the end of the 2 days, we had heaps of fun and did amazingly in each of our divisions. - Angus Gourlay.

Winter Sports Tournament Week

Hockey Girls
The South Island Tier 4 Girls hockey tournament was held in Ashburton this year with 7 other teams competing. The girls had a fun week playing hockey and becoming closer as a team, though we didn't get the results we wanted on the field I'm sure all the girls will agree that the level of hockey played was the best we played all season. We made a lot of memories throughout the week and challenged each other to play the best hockey we could. Big thanks to coach Jordyn Hasselberg, manager Helen Hodder and Carolyn Wright for dealing with us all week we hope we made it easy for you.

Badminton
The Premiere Boys and Girls as well as the Senior A boys competed in the Canterbury Badminton team Championships on Monday and Tuesday. Both our Premiere teams went through the tournaments undefeated to be Canterbury Champions!

Basketball Boys

The Senior A Boys Basketball boys competed in the South Island Premiere Championships for the first time in many years. Although they did not pick up any wins the pool play they were really competitive with Waimea College, who finished 2nd overall, only trailing by 10 for most of the match.

The team had a strong finish to the tournament picking up two wins on the last day beating Ashburton as well as getting revenge over Lincoln High School who they had lost to earlier in the tournament.

Over all it was great to test themselves against some of the tops teams from around the South Island.

Basketball Girls

The Senior Girls A Basketball team competed in the Southern Schools Cup down in Dunedin. Our team included students from Year 10 right through to Year 13 girls and we managed some great results, only losing to the top team by 17 points. It was fantastic to be able to head away on a tournament after COVID-19 caused the cancellation of so many previous tournaments.

We came away with 7th place after being placed in the top section. I am really proud of all the girls and their efforts. Also a big thank you to Dave, Tania, and Miss Bell for joining us for the week. - Chelsy Jones.

Netball

This year was the first time that Riccarton High School has ever played in the A grade at the South Island Secondary School Netball tournament (which is usually an annual event). At the last tournament we played in 2019, prior to COVID-19, our team came 2nd place in B grade, hence our relegation up into A grade.

The girls played out of their skin and were competitive the whole competition, never losing their games by more than 8-10 goals. The first game was against Ashburton College which we narrowly lost by 3 goals. We played some talented teams, including Otago Girls, who finished 8th, and Wakatipu High school, who finished 12th. We did win an extraordinary game against Avonside Girls High School 44-42 in extra time as it was drawn at full time. This brought a lot of smiley tears to the girls and coaching team as they had come so close so many times along the way and had finally executed a win.

Unfortunately we lost the last game against Ashburton College .. again... which meant we finished 30th in A grade but out of 76 Netball teams in the competition.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the coach, Tash Austin and manager, Ange Laing for taking time out of their job's to support, encourage and motivate the girls both on and off the court. We had lots of fun and I know the girls have made some lasting memories. - Kara Ross.
