RHS Sports - May Round Up

RHS Sports, Angus Gourlay, Sam Leary —

Winter sports have kicked off here at Riccarton High School and it is all go!

It is great to have so many students playing as well as helping out with refereeing, coaching and managing teams as well.

Come down and support

We have sports happening here each Wednesday and our teams love to have their fellow students cheering them on. From football and netball outside to our badminton players in the gym. On Fridays, our basketball teams play in the gym from 4pm-7pm. It is always a great atmosphere and there is plenty of exciting action on the court.

 High Achievers

Congratulations to our Senior A Netball team who have once again qualified for SuperNet, where they will compete against the other top teams from around Christchurch. This is a great achievement in one of New Zealand’s most popular and competitive sports.

They compete on Wednesdays at either St Margaret’s College or St Andrew’s College. Later in the season, they will be off to compete at South Island Division 1 Championships.

Our Senior Badminton players are going to be competing at the South Island School Championships later in June. This will be a great test to see where they are ranked after finishing 3rd in the Canterbury Championships last year. Badminton is really taking off here at Riccarton with 16 teams competing each week!

Our Senior A Basketball Boys recorded their first-ever win in Thompson Trophy Division 1 this week when they took on Rangiora HS. The team is led by ex-Riccarton HS student Carlton Chitongo, who has been putting in a lot of work with these boys over the past few years.

Our Senior A Basketball Girls have won two games in a row and are looking like they could be contenders in their Division as well. Head down on Tuesday nights to see the teams in action.

Wondering if you should have signed up?

If you are still keen to join a sports team for the winter then we need you! We have several sports that need players! Head down to see Mr Gourlay in the Sports Office and he will be able to get you up and running in one of our awesome sports.

Girls Football Update:

Our RHS Girls Football 1st X1 drew 0-0 with Avonside Girls on Wednesday 18 May. An extremely exciting game was played with our Riccarton team showing great strength in their defensive skills during the first half of the game. With the sun on their backs in the second half, Riccarton created an equal number of chances to score, but the game ended fairly at 0-0.

Well done girls and keep up the magnificent work.
