Wananga

Anne Jacques —

KIA ORA KOUTOU. On the weekend of the 24th March, the kapahaka held a special wananga at school in preparation for the regional kapahaka competition later this year.

Over the Friday evening, all of Saturday and Sunday morning, they learnt new waiata and actions, and practiced until they were all exhausted. The tutors said that it was wonderful to see how the confidence and skill level grew, so that by the end of the weekend, all the members of the kapahaka were preforming strongly as a united group.

It was also great to see the whanau and community support as parents came in to spend time with their tamariki, to help prepare and serve kai, and to assist in the tidying up. It was a very tiring weekend for the adults who also spend Saturday night sleeping with their akonga.

Special thanks to Matua Murray, Whaea Latoya, Matua Te Huaki and Tyson for their patience, support and teaching throughout the entire weekend. Another thanks to all the parents who came along to cook our delicious kai all weekend and to help serve and clean up. At least one more wananga is planned in the build up to the competition, perhaps during these school holidays.
