School Mural

Kate Stedman (13SN) —

During the last holidays the Environment Committee got to work on a mural to represent our school environment.

The gorgeous design of a pair of hands holding a seedling was drafted by Ruby Perring on a piece of paper first before we set to work on bringing it to life.

The first step was getting support from Bunnings, who kindly supplied us with a deal on plywood, and Resene, who sent us paints to help us along. We chose white, 2 shades of green and black paint.

For the second step we used the white base paint on the plywood. This took multiple coats and was a long drying process. This part took the longest amount of time and was spread out over a couple of days as there was not much for us to do until the drying was complete.

After three coats of the white paint a projector was used to project Ruby’s draft onto the wood so that it could be transferred to provide us with an outline to follow. We then began filling in the lines with the other paint colours.

The final result complete with flying birds and leaves was even better than we could have expected. It took hard work and time but it was an enjoyable process and made us closer as a committee. We can’t wait for it to be put up for everyone to enjoy! Keep a look-out to see where it pops up in the near future.
