Special Needs Department News

Jill Turnbull —

Term four is always a fun, interesting and busy time for the students in the special needs classes.

We enjoyed an educational trip (as part of our Te Reo Māori topic) to the Rapaki Marae where we learned about correct marae behaviour. Students enjoyed the hospitality of the tangata whenua and were very interested in the history of the wharenui. Following the marae trip we visited the Canterbury Museum to look at the Māori exhibits.

The annual picnic lunch at the Ilam Gardens when the rhododendrons and azaleas were at their best was another extra-curricular adventure – students and staff catching the buses to the university, eating at the University Staff Club and exploring the paths around the gardens. We always check to see if we can all join hands around the biggest tree there – accomplished well this year!

In Maths students have been focusing on Measurement and have been applying their skills and knowledge in co-operative baking. If the team gets the measurements wrong then the baking experiment will be a disaster! So far so good….the jellies set and the peanut butter logs were delicious. The next recipe is for ice cream which will be a popular choice.
