International Department Update
It’s been a busy term for the International Department. We welcomed 19 new students at the beginning of term 3, spanning many areas of the globe, including: Chile, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Hong Kong and the U.S.A.
At present, Riccarton High School is home to 43 international students. These students have been acquainted with our International Peer Support group, who organised some fun games and activities for the students. Mr Haywood and Matua Roberts treated them to a traditional Māori welcome with a Mihi Whakatau, and some shared kai afterwards. The orientation program for our new students concluded with a visit to the Central Business District and a tram ride, providing a novel experience for many participants.
The following week, the students were welcomed by the Christchurch Mayor at an exclusive reception for international students held at the Ngā Hau e Whā National Marae. This event served as a significant and unforgettable introduction to the Canterbury region.
Several exciting extracurricular activities have taken place recently. Many of our students celebrated their time here by attending the Senior Formal where they relished selecting attire and dance partners! Some of the girls had practised their dance moves at a Hip Hop showcase, held at school one evening. Fourteen students participated in a ski trip to Porters ski field, where there was a mix of experienced skiers or snowboarders and complete beginners. There have been lots of fun things to do to stay entertained during the chilly weather!
Many students stay with local homestay families while they are here. These families introduce them to Kiwi life, Christchurch and its many wonderful activities, and provide accommodation and meals. We are currently seeking more suitable families. If you are interested, please contact the Homestay Coordinator: noelia@riccarton.school.nz
Ngā mihi.
