The Lifelong Learner

Riccarton High School —

As a school we are dedicated to developing and supporting the independent, lifelong learner – students who have a zest for learning and are capable of selecting, managing and evaluating their own learning.

Independent lifelong learners will be

  • Curious – want to find out more
  • Persistent – stays focused to complete tasks
  • Enterprising – takes opportunities to learn
  • Creative – make use of existing knowledge in new ways
  • Resilient – stay calm, overcome obstacles, bounce back

Successful learners are

  • Literate
  • Numerate
  • Digitally competent and connected
  • Critical thinkers
  • Self managing
  • Relationship builders
  • Participants and contributors

We aim to

  • Raise student achievement by fostering these qualities, skills and competencies

School leavers in the 21st Century must have the foundational skills of numeracy and literacy. They must also be critical thinkers, self-managing, adaptable, confident risk-takers, collaborative, and creative users of knowledge.

We will achieve this by

  • Quality teaching: The development of best teaching practice through whole staff professional development.
  • Quality relationships: The key to raising student achievement is connecting students with teachers who support them not just as learners, but also as people.
  • Quality structures: The development and ongoing review of a curriculum and management structures to ensure students develop the skills, qualities and competencies relevant to a 21st century learner

Look at students as they are, and they will stay that way.
Look at students as they could be, and they will become what they should be.
