Orion Chau (13GN) and Spencer Lindsay (11WS) by Spencer Lindsay

Promising young volleyballer gets the experience of a lifetime

Riccarton High Year 11 Student, Spencer Lindsay, shares his incredible achievement with us.

During the September school holidays, I travelled to Canberra to train and scrimmage with a number of top Australian athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport. I participated as an athlete from the New Zealand Youth Men's Development Team. This team consisted of 7 North Island and 7 South Island players, with 2 of those players hailing from Canterbury. It was a great week with many laughs. I learned a lot and felt like I improved throughout the week. It was great having both  Australian and New Zealand coaches teaching me new skills and techniques. While I was there I was lucky enough to catch up with our RHS Sports Prefect, Orion Chau, who was on the tour as well.

I feel like the week I was away has prepared me very well for the upcoming national trial in Auckland. Joe Baxter, Riley Holland (also from RHS) and I will all be attending the trial camp with the top players selected for the New Zealand team to play in the 2020 Asian Champs, held in Bahrain next March.
