Road Safety

Both the Main South Road and Curletts Road entrances to Riccarton High School have pedestrian crossings which are controlled by traffic lights. In addition to these, there is a pedestrian crossing on Main South Road which staff and students from Te Kāpehu Riccarton School control with road patrol signs before and after school.

In the garden outside the Performing Arts block there is a plaque that acts as a reminder of how dangerous these main roads are, as it commemorates a Riccarton High student who was run over and killed on Curletts Road.

This year we have had two students hit by cars and injured while crossing the road outside of the school. In both cases they were not using the controlled crossings. Thankfully, their injuries were not serious.

The roads around our school are very busy. Main South Road is particularly challenging at the moment due to ongoing roadworks.

We urge everyone to use the controlled traffic light crossings and to wait and make sure the traffic has stopped completely, in both directions, before crossing the road.
