Marae Visits

Following the successful visits by Year 9 to Te Wheke, the marae at Rapaki, our Year 10s have all spent some time at Te Whatumanawa Māoritanga o Rehua Marae in Springfield Road.

We were welcomed on with a pōwhiri, and spent some time with elders from the marae, learning the stories, sharing kai and sharing our pepeha with each other.

These visits were prepared in the Social Studies classes, where ākonga learned the process and tikanga of the pōwhiri and prepared a koha and waiata.

For some of our ākonga, this was their first visit to a marae, while most had already participated in a visit last year to Rapaki.

They were very interested in the differences between both whare nui, with many preferring the more traditional colours and patterns at Rehua.
