Canterbury Junior Volleyball Championships

Five teams represented Riccarton High School in the tournament that was played over three days in November.

The Year10 A boys team took out the title playing superb volleyball to defeat a strong Shirley Boys' team 2-0. 

This team was coached by an ex-pupil Jeremy Nielsen and the standard of play of these boys represents the commitment to practices by the boys and the quality of practice. 

Five boys made the Canterbury tournament team; Riley Holland, Daniel Griebel, Spencer Lindsay, Dean Brown and Joe Baxter. Joe was also selected M the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. 

The Year 9 boys team, coached by Angus Gourlay battled it out in Division 2 to come 7th.

The girls A team coached by Mary Edmondson narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot to come 5th. Britney Dyson was selected in the tournament team. The Girls B team where place 15th in Division 1 and the Year 9 Girls team placed 6th in Division 2.

South Island Champs

Carrying on from their great form in the Canterbury Champs the boys went to the South Island Champs in Dunedin feeling confident but also apprehensive. 

They made it through the first pools game with only one loss to an Australian team, which gave them more purpose and direction. 

Undefeated, they made it through to the semi-final, beating Nelson Boys 2-1. 

The final against Waimea was a close battle in the first set with Riccarton showing the courage to keep attacking and take out the first set 25-23. 

In the second set, they gained a lead early on in the set through effective serving and kept this throughout the second set by continually looking to attack, winning the second set and the title.

Spencer Lindsay, Dean Brown, Daniel Griebel were named in the tournament team along with Joe Baxter who was also named Most Valuable Player
