"Assalamu Alaikum”- peace be upon you as we commemorate 15th March

It has been two years since the 15 March tragedy here in Christchurch, and we still grieve for our Muslim community. Although we cannot change our past, we can look forward and make positive changes in our actions to celebrate diversity and unity in our community.

Throughout the month of March, we respectfully remembered the victims of the 15th March tragedy and showed our respect by doing various activities.

The Wellbeing Committee and RHS Muslim group created a task group who organised tributes to acknowledge the date.

On 8th of March, they planted flowers of four house colours in the school's Memorial Garden.

Thanks to Mr John Steed for organising the colourful pansies and guiding the students to plant them.

On 15th of March, the whole school performed a minute of silence at the field. It was amazing to see how proactively the students and the staff members participated as a team.

We all stood in a circle on the school field and the head students and Mr Haywood led us to perform the minute of silence.

The senior student executives had also initiated a wall of remembrance. The wall of the L block that faces the library was transformed as a wall of remembrance on that day. Students and staff put up post-it notes, lay flowers and candles there.

At the end of the day, the wall was full of beautiful notes that supported the idea that “we are one.” We collected all of the notes and laminated them on a couple of A3 papers, and gifted them and the flowers to Al Noor Mosque on behalf of our school.

We have also organised a shared lunch for the RHS Muslim students. A big shout out to the 15th March task team, especially, Shifa Ahmed, Matteo Zhang, Huda Mazharuddin, Jane Mani, Ahmed Lulu for organising these beautiful activities.

Thanks to the whole RHS community for supporting the events and believing in “we are one.”
