Career Talks
On Tuesday and Thursday of week 5, the year 13’s interested in tertiary education were given the opportunity to attend two separate talks about the possibilities of their futures outside of high school concerning university.
Dan from The University of Canterbury came in on Tuesday. It was the first ever year 13 focused university presentation that took place at Rolleston College so it was a first and unique experience for most students. The presentation was very interactive, students were able to choose what subjects were discussed from the long list of offered subjects at the university. It was wonderful and very eye-opening to hear about all the life-changing opportunities merely a 25 minute drive away from home and inspired a lot of future-focused thinking.
Then, we were lucky enough to be visited by Ruby from the Victoria University of Wellington. Personally, this university is my top choice at the moment, so I was very excited when I heard they were coming in. It was extremely interesting and eye opening, especially considering possible scholarships we could apply for and all of the halls of residence available for application. It’s fantastic culture and access to the bee-hive is a definite selling point, and I look forward to going up for an open day and having a look around the campuses myself.
I think I can speak on behalf of my peers when I say the thought of university is a scary but exciting one and I am so happy I was able to attend these two presentations and I hope to attend more in the near future.
