Winter Sport

Jordan Jefferis —

Winter sport is now underway at Rolleston College.

For the first time this year we have five learners in the squad playing in the Rugby UC Cup under Lincoln Combined. This is a big step forward for us as a school as we get closer to having a stand alone team in the premier competition. Well done to Liam Jack, Caleb Smith, Tyler Illes, Rico Havenga and Nic Pilditch.

We have our under 16 team competing under Rolleston Rugby Club again this season and being coached by Todd Paterson. They are a talented bunch of boys and are enjoying getting back into Rugby for 2020.

Basketball continues to grow here at the College with 11 teams in total! Three of these are girls teams. It's awesome to see so many learners being active and having fun on a Friday night. Our school gym is a hive of activity and a fun night for both players and spectators.

We have our top boys team playing in the Christchurch schools Tuesday night Thomson and Whelan competition. We have been placed in Division 2 in the hope that we work our way up to being in Division one next year. Many of these players also play Saturday Basketball for school. A huge thanks must go to Cameron Drewett and Gareth Costley for their dedication to our basketball programme at Rolleston College. They both put in a huge amount of hours for our learners and we are very grateful.

We have both a girls and boys Hockey team playing in the midweek town competition. They are enjoying the challenge and love getting out there playing for school. Thanks to Fred Dodson for coaching the girls and Hayden Shaw for coaching the boys team.

This year we have our first Senior boys Football team. They are a team of skilled footballers and we can see big things coming for them in the future with the help of Selwyn Football Club and tapping into their resources. We are working together to achieve the best for the boys.

Table tennis is getting underway in the Wednesday Competition next term with 2 teams playing. They have some awesome coaching from Maria Darroch and her passion is certainly wearing off onto the players.

We have five Netball teams representing Rolleston College in the Wednesday town sport competition at varying levels and grades. With no tournaments this year due to Covid we see this as a real development year and making some good gains looking towards Tournament next year. Thank you to Chloe Duff, Livi Coyle, Ella Jarvis and Olivia Kempton who as year 12 learners have taken on the challenge to coach junior teams as well Denise Keno, Millie Martin and Lou Milne who have taken the reins of our senior teams.

Probably the most unlikely sport for our location would be rowing! We have a team go out and train twice a week and they are loving it! It's great to see these learners so committed to this. You never know we could be buying boats in a few years!! Thanks to Athena Evans for being the driving force behind this group.

As we all know sport would not happen without the help and support from staff, parents and community members. We are always in need of coaches, umpires/referees and people to help us out. We want as many learners being active as possible in both a competitive and social way. If you would like to find out more about how to get involved please contact carolyn.corbett@rollestoncollege.nz
