Tangata ako ana i te whare, te turanga ki te marae, tau ana

Literally this whakatauaki or saying means - A person, who is taught at home, will stand collected on the Marae.

In a wider sense this saying speaks to the idea that a child, who is taught proper values at home and cherished within their family, will not only behave well amongst their own family but also within society and throughout his life.

At Rolleston College we appreciate and acknowledge the hard work that parents put in at home to instill good values and morals in our young people - values that encompass good citizenship, kindness and respect. At school we reinforce these messages through teaching our Rolleston Spirit values and corresponding dispositions - Develop Self, Build Communities and Transform Futures.

We acknowledge also that the partnership between school and home is vitally important to learner success.

We ask our college families to please let us know about the good things your child is doing beyond school so we can celebrate these things. We also ask that if there are issues or problems that you raise them with us as a school. We are committed to making sure that families feel heard and respected within Rolleston College as we all work together for the betterment of the young people in our community. Your Child’s Ako/Advisory Coach is the first point of contact for any worries or questions as this is the teacher who spends much time with your child every week.

Next week as a nation we celebrate Matariki and the school will be closed on Friday 24th for this public holiday. Matariki is guided by the following 3 major principles:

We hope that as a family you find time to gather together and celebrate and take some time to spend together doing the things that are important to your family.
