Introduction to R2L

The purpose of Positive Behaviour for Learning-School Wide (referred to as Ready to Learn at Rolleston College) is to ensure the Rolleston Spirit is flourishing within our school.

What is the Rolleston Spirit?

Our school values are Develop self, Build communities and Transform futures. The ‘Be’ statements inside the circle are the dispositions.

What is Positive Behaviour for Learning?

Positive Behaviour for Learning: School-wide (PB4L) is a framework used by schools to develop initiatives that “support students to improve their behaviour, resilience and wellbeing. PB4L came out of the Taumata Whanonga behaviour summit in 2009. The summit recommended that the Ministry of Education look internationally for successful initiatives with a strong research and evidence base. These initiatives were then adapted to fit the culturally responsive context of New Zealand. (PB4L Overview 2015).

It is about:

  • Establishing a flourishing learning environment for all

  • Teaching desirable behaviours

  • Improving behaviour support systems for learners

  • Increasing positive interactions with learners

  • Using data for decision making

  • Decreasing reactive management

  • Expectations

More information about R2L can be found on the college website, which has been recently updated.

Start of Year Expectations

Learners develop self by arriving on class to school and class on time. School starts at 8.50am each day, except for Wednesdays when school starts at 8.30am.

To ensure that learners have their focus on their learning and to develop self, there are clear expectations that phones should be on silent and in their bags during class time. If they do need to use their phone for learning, it is important that they ask the teacher first.

Likewise, to help build community, the expectation is that they must wear the correct Rolleston College uniform. The wearing of non-regulation items like hoodies or baseball caps will lead to these items being confiscated. Visual reminders are up around the College to remind learners of these expectations about phones and uniform.

Learners need to wait at the appropriate external entry doors to their classes and will be brought into their classes by their teachers. Likewise, at the end of lessons, learners will leave using the external exits.

Staff have gone through these expectations with the learners and there are visual reminders up around the college to remind learners of these expectations.

Recognitions

Staff will be rewarding learners for meeting these expectations by using the R2L recognition system. Senior learners are able to apply for a range of badges based on them displaying the R2L expectations and Rolleston College Spirit.
