Foreign Language Trips

Jordan Jefferis —

Fun language. Fun food.

Recently our year 10 language learners, as well as some of our senior language learners, have enjoyed trips to local restaurants in order to sample the cuisine of the language they are studying. Learners were able to order their food in their language and interact with the restaurant staff in an authentic cultural environment.

The 10-12 French class traveled in the school vans to Maison de Crepes to experience what it’s like to order and eat in a French restaurant. The class got to order two crepes, one of them being savoury and the other being sweet, and a drink. The trip gave the students an opportunity to practice speaking french outside the classroom and in a real world scenario. The class thoroughly enjoyed the meal and had a great time.

Our Spanish class had a Spanish Lunch at the end of term 3. We went to Christchurch to the Curator’s House. The waitress was very nice and we were very pleased with the food. The food was so amazing, especially the chicken paella. We all enjoyed our lunch.

Last week some students who are learning Chinese walked down to the Phoenix restaurant in Rolleston. We had a delicious lunch and we enjoyed practising our Chinese to order the food. We recommend this local restaurant to our community. The service was good and the food was excellent.

The year 10 Japanese class went to a Japanese restaurant called Tomi in Christchurch. The meal started with a complimentary miso soup. Miso is a traditional Japanese paste that is made from fermented soybeans, among other ingredients. The main course for this trip was a bento, which is a Japanese lunchbox that contains a variety of items. Some of these items consisted of Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), Sashimi (raw fish), Tamagoyaki (a rolled omelette which is sweetened with sugar) and other Japanese dishes. Everyone managed to make it through the meal with the provided chopsticks, with a few students showing their creativity after struggling for a while picking up the food.
