Raumati
In this newsletter we have two of our Whanau Ambassadors discussing what their personal legacy is at Rolleston College. For term three, we have a focus on how each learner can build their legacy at Rolleston College by focusing on high performance through their mindset, actions and everyday habits.
On Friday we explored the words of Pat Riley, one of the most successful coaches in NBA history. He defines greatness as: “Everyone has their own greatness. Whether you reach your own greatness depends on your environment, your structure, the company you keep and the mindset you have”.
In Raumati Whanau we have defined expectations and values that all learners live by in order for them to write their legacy here at Rolleston College. You can find them here on this link:

Term 3 Theme: Leave your Legacy in Raumati
Year 10 Learner Tom Stenhouse
Hello! You might know me, but if you don’t my name is Tom Stenhouse. We’ve been learning an awful lot about legacy and how to build yours, so I’ve been invited to speak about what I do to build up mine.
Well, for starters I’m a Whanau Ambassador and I like to take opportunities given to me, like a week or two ago I was offered to help with the Whanau Canta -Math Competition and we didn’t do too badly! I’ve also been on the school football team and try my best when confronted with new challenges.
Those are cool in all, but the most important thing, in my opinion, to create a positive legacy is building communities. Legacy is what you leave behind and the mark that you give on others. This is why leaving that positive mark is so important! Think about it, do you want to be remembered as that awesome guy who had everyone’s back and made everyone laugh, or the guy who just shrugged their shoulders and copied your homework. So you want to leave that positive impact by helping others and giving back to stuff.
I can’t stress this enough, but do you remember doing something for someone and them not returning the favor. Yeah, it hurts a little. Finally, people are here to assist you and get you to the places that you want to go. There is this one quote that reflects what I just said and that I’ll leave you guys with: “Go fast, go alone. But go far, go together.” Thank you for hearing me speak. Goodbye!
Year 10 Learner Jack Hocken
Hi, My name is Jack and I am a Whanau Ambassador here at Rolleston College. I am delighted to be able to speak to you about my experiences of being a Whanau Ambassador.
My goal is to create a legacy by taking advantage of all opportunities available here at college, by staying positive and encouraging others to do so as well. As even the small things like helping a classmate and staying positive helps me create a legacy.
Being a Whanau Ambassador has allowed me to do many things such as going to an Inspire day at Lincoln University where ex professional sportsmen spoke about their experiences and how we can learn from it. We also got to go to an awesome camp at the beginning of the year where we learnt about leadership and had a lot of fun while doing it.
Personally, I am a passionate sportsperson and Rolleston College has so many opportunities for sports mad students like me. For example, this January I am lucky enough to be part of the College’s first international sports trip which is a cricket tour to Australia. We will be based in Melbourne and will be playing some Aussie school teams, so we will have to practice our underarm bowling.
Raumati Whanau has the highest expectations. As being the five time Whanau champions makes it even more important to carry on the legacy that the previous Raumati students have created. By always representing yourself well in all school activities we will only improve our reputation. Make the most of all the opportunities on offer at Rolleston College. And remember NO EXCUSES.

Learning Conversations with your Child
Raumati learners in Years 9 - 11 have a range of subjects that they take. This requires managing learning, understanding what is required and when particular aspects of learning are due. You can support your child by asking at home:
Do you need any help planning your work or getting started?
What pieces of learning do you have due in the next two weeks (there should always be something due)
What was the most interesting thing you learned in school today?
Can you share a specific moment in your learning today where you felt successful?
What was something that you learned today that was new? How did this make you feel?
Is there anything you are curious about or would like to learn more about?
Can you tell me about any challenges you faced in your schoolwork today?
In secondary school, the support that we adults provide for our young people shifts to helping them organise themselves and develop good study and work habits. Raumati staff continue to be impressed by the intelligence of our learners and their enthusiasm for learning. However, they’re still adolescents and learning important life skills. Your support will ensure they are able to reach their full potential.
Athena’s Advisory Advice
What is the Legacy You Want To Leave?
It is getting to that time of the year when you need to start thinking about what is the legacy you want to leave? Everyone that has been a learner at our kura will always be a part of our kura. What have you done to leave your mark, how will others remember you?
Year 12s have been busy looking at courses for next year. Even though you have made your choices it is never too late to meet with your Advisory Coaches or our amazing careers team to talk about how we can support you for your future. Those who are not coming back it is important that you know what you need to be successful so we can help you attain it.
Year 13s it has been so amazing working with you for the last few years! You have all taught me something and left an impact. You only have a few weeks left. Remember you can never go back and redo this time so make the most of it.
Derived Grade examinations are happening in the next few weeks. These exams are extremely important as we can use these grades if for some reason you can’t sit the end of year exams. It is also extremely important so teachers know where you might need some extra support to prepare you for exams in the best way.
