Marian Mehrtens —

Working in hospitality front of house means I work with customers a lot, I serve on the till and take food and drinks to the customers and soon I hope to be making the coffees. I have also had some experience working in the kitchen, cleaning and also making food. I am working with Industry Training Solutions as a distance learning student.

Before starting Gateway I knew I wanted to leave school by the end of the year but didn't know which career path I wanted to take, it was good being able to research careers and have taster days in almost any career to get a feel for what I like the most.

The jobs I researched were a firefighter, police officer, kindergarten teacher and front of house worker in hospitality. Because of how dangerous firefighting and being a police officer is, I was unable to do taster days there so I did mine at Mocca Cafe and Little Wonders.  I decided that front of house work was the direction I wanted to go and was lucky to have the opportunity to carry on at Mocca Cafe for my work experience placement.

For my distance learning I have to get tasks verified in the workplace and also do theory work which gets sent away for marking. My booklet includes papers on customer service, preparing and cleaning areas for table service and preparing and serving hot and cold drinks to customers. My plan is to begin a career in hospitality, I like working with people and want to gain social skills to help with my career goal of going into the police force sometime in the future.
