Gateway update
Congratulations to Roncalli College Gateway Graduate Fraser Pattie
Gateway Update
We are well underway with our 2018 Gateway Programme with almost 40 students participating. Students are looking at a wide range of careers ranging from trades, hospitality and retail to aviation, early childhood education and everything in between.
We have almost 30 students and employers already signed into Gateway Training Agreements and more students trialling taster days ready to start placements. Industry Training Organisation (ITO) Training Advisers visit students in their workplaces (just like an apprentice) and often visit them at school to assess industry units. This week we have had visits from MITO (Motor Industry), Service IQ (Retail, Aviation and Hospitality) and BCITO (Building and Construction), with students already well underway with assessment.
Consistent work experience is a key part of the programme with advantages to both students and employers. We have already had two students taking up apprenticeship opportunities this year and there are a couple more in the wind – watch this space!
William Ellis has completed a work placement and has signed out of school into full time apprenticeship training with his Gateway employer Nolan Building. Whitley Payne has also had a successful outcome after completing the electrical programme with Morris Waddell Electrical where he finished his Skills Organisation Electrical unit standards before leaving into a full time position with Johnson Building. Congratulations to both of these boys, a good outcome for them and their employers.
We will be profiling students in the newsletter over the coming months, we hope you like reading about their experiences.
Congratulations Fraser Pattie
Fraser was awarded a MITO Kick Start Scholarship at a special ceremony held in Christchurch recently. He completed the MITO Start-Up Ignition Programme through Gateway last year and gained an apprenticeship with his Gateway employer Babbage and McCullough. The award was presented by David O'Kane, Chairman of the Board of MITO.
Completing Gateway at school allowed Fraser to try out a career in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing. He attended work experience once a week and made a start on his qualification while completing NCEA at school.
Fraser attended a special function in Christchurch earlier this year along with Jim Arps from Babbage and McCullough. He receives $1000 towards his training fees and a certificate of recognition.
A significant achievement - congratulations Fraser
