Gateway work experience

Marian Mehrtens —

If you or anyone in our community can assist with work experience opportunities, we would love to hear from you, whether it is for a one-day taster or an ongoing day per week throughout the year.

Gateway is a programme where selected senior students try out a career while continuing with their academic programme at school. They gain valuable experience and achieve credits towards an industry qualification which can often take time off an apprenticeship.

Thirty three students have been accepted into the pre-Gateway phase of the programme. Each student has the opportunity to trial 3 “taster days” to help them with choosing one career which then becomes their Gateway focus for the year.

Taster days are where students visit a range of workplaces experiencing what it is like in the real world of work. Students attend the workplace for a full working day depending on what suits the employer and what is happening on the day. Work experience is unpaid and while it is a great way for employers to try out potential future employees there is no requirement or expectation to offer paid employment at the end of the programme.  We do ask employers to take some time to teach students new skills and expect students to be fully committed to the workplace they sign up for.

We have a large range of careers being investigated including banking, nursing, jeweler, early childhood, teaching, farming, hospitality, retail, design plus strong interest in the trades including construction, electrical, automotive, plumbing, joinery, engineering, painting & decorating and much more. We have ninety nine work experience taster days to cater for over the next few weeks (33 students x 3 taster days each) and welcome inquiries from interested employers in our community. Thank you to employers who have already offered assistance.
