The Catholic College's Sports Tournament, Gore

Andrew Jones —

The form of the Roncalli Girls First XI looks set to continue in 2018 as they crush the southern Catholic schools.

It was a dominant performance from the girls, many of whom have been in the team for the past 5 years and are looking to end their time on a high. After crushing St Kevin's in the first game 10-1, the girls scored profusely in the other matches to remain unbeaten over two years to capture the tournament's girls football trophy for the 2nd year in a row.

The team's core of the ubiquitous Maddy Atwill, impenetrable Olivia Clarkson and Lucca Ayers, powerhouse boot of Dharma Brooks, all under the leadership of Olivia Milne will be looking to commemorate their final year at Roncalli and repeat their finals appearance against St Hilda's in 2017. The addition of Lottie van Duien (former academy player) from the North Island has given the team some on field direction from in goal. There is a spread of youth and experience across the team from other year levels and there is a steely determination among the younger girls who refuse to be overawed by their older opponents.

The First XV also signaled a promising start to their season retaining the inter school trophy with Kavanagh  with Ben Thomson nailing a penalty and then some resolute defence in the dying minutes of the game to win 8-7. Of particular note is the regaining of the Simpson Dorgan Trophy from St Kevin's in a courageous come from behind victory. After a slow start, a switch was flicked after half time and in 7 minutes of flawless rugby the team avenged their loss a couple of weeks earlier. It was only a dubious 0-0 draw with the hosts that meant that the overall rugby trophy was shared with St Peter's. Led by Freddy Vereivalu, the team showed promising signs for the beginning of the UC Championship against CBHS on 5 May at the Thunderdome.

Whilst the girls and boys basketball teams struggled on the scoreboard, both teams have a blend of experienced and inexperienced players and saw this tournament as valuable  moving forward. There were some heartening performances with Tom Kerr, Hajie Tamorite and Brittney Young their full commitment to the team against some taller and very physical opposition and Luca Shaw signalling that as  Year 10 student he will be a valuable member of the team in 2018.

The hockey competition was reduced to an 8 a side affair making for some entertaining, end to end action. Hockey is having a huge resurgence at the College with both girls and boys fielding both First and Second XIs in 2018, with youthful exuberance in the teams. Led ably by Mya Nevin and Ed Heenan, these admirals from the back will mould and harness the younger players moving forward. Thomas Flynn, Rueben Lee and Will Davenport showed both strength and pace to indicate that the extra competition for places will pay dividends during the regular season.

In the same vain, the Senior A Netball team saw this tournament as an opportunity to blend the youth of the new Year 11 players with the experience of the Year 13 returning girls. Welcoming back Amanda Sheehan from her experience at Seaford College over the Xmas break, she was a dominant and consistent presence in the defensive circle. Speed through the court meant that Teisha Holden showed great vision to find both the energetic and synchronised Sophie Lyons and Mia Harding Richardt. With Kate McLaughlin there is depth, variation and exciting talent in the shooting circle in 2018. As a squad the girls had their best performance against a taller and more experienced St Kevin's in a nail biting finish that saw Roncalli 1 point victors.

The overall spoils for the tournament went to St Kevin's in a narrow victory over Kavanagh, with Roncalli placed 4th.
