Congratulations to 9H

Ellen Walsh —

Congratulations to the students of 9H RST who are winners of the South Canterbury Youth Art Project Supreme Award 2019.

The local competition is run by Ara, Te Rito, Wave, Creative Nz, Fusion Studio and the YMCA and is open to young people aged 12-24.

Before beginning the project the students unpacked this years theme of “we are more than you see” and had some insightful and robust class discussions.

Often teenagers are stereotyped negatively when in reality they have so much to offer!

The black fabric at the top of the art piece symbolises removing negative labels given to teenagers so that positive traits can be exposed.

Each student selected a positive word to describe teenagers and created an individual art piece which contributed to a larger class project.

These are mixed media pieces with some being done on paper or canvas and many have been carried out on recycled off cuts of wood.

Thank you to Mrs Konings and Momka Kanai who were at the presentations and received the beautiful trophy on our behalf.

Congratulations also to Alexi Cook who entered two pieces into the competition individually. Alexi received an award for one of these excellent artworks, Ka pai tō mahi Alexi!
