Gateway Profile - Annabel Bartlett

Marian Mehrtens —

Retail

The careers I researched included cafe work, animal training, animal grooming, and baking, I also trialed a taster day in rest home care.   For my Gateway placement I spent 10 weeks at The Warehouse, Timaru where I completed the Red Shirts in Schools Programme.

This job involved seeing most of the behind the scenes work done in retail like stocking shelves, putting back items, cleaning up and even dealing with customers. I got put through all the different areas in the store to see what it was like. There was clothing (shoes etc.), Click and Collect, back dock, toys, gardening/plants and entertainment. There was a wide variety of areas throughout The Warehouse that I hadn't even thought of until I did my work experience. I am very thankful for this experience because it changed my view on retail and let me see  behind the scenes and what it’s like.

The ITO I registered with is Service IQ. The unit standards I have done involved theory at The Warehouse.  Hannah who is a Service IQ Training Adviser came to the store every 2 weeks to teach and assess our work.  The physical work tasks were also assessed in store.  These units count towards a Certificate in Retail and they count towards NZQA, I gained 22 Level 2 credits.
