Ashton Piner - Plunket Electrical

Marian Mehrtens —

At work experience I go with a qualified tradesman for the day, I could be helping to measure and wire up lights or doing something completely different; it's always a surprise .

I am doing my work experience at Plunket Electrical every Thursday, I work with someone different each week. The work is varied, one day you could be setting up lights at a school, the next you could be at a dairy farm.

Before starting Gateway I wanted to be a builder when I leave school but that changed after doing research on other careers. The careers I researched were being a plumber, electrician and air conditioning technician. My first taster day was with Aotea Electrical, I really enjoyed the work with them and I believe it was the right one for me. My second taster day was with Masterchill, I enjoyed it there but decided it was not for me. I chose working as an electrician that Is the work I wanted to do.

At school I am working on Skills Organisation units which include electrical safety, filling out reports, using power tools and hand tools. The credits I gain through Skills also count towards NCEA. My Skills assessments get posted away for marking once I have done them. My plans for next year are hopefully getting an electrical apprenticeship and if I do not find an apprenticeship I will most likely go to Ara or come back to school to get Level 3. If I could give any advice for future Gateway students I would say to try and be as helpful as possible when in the workplace.
