Before I started Gateway this year I was looking forward to getting some new experience in the workforce and learning new skills that I would need for real life work.

Before I started Gateway this year I was looking forward to getting some new experience in the workforce and learning new skills that I would need for real life work.  I wondered if I would be helpful in a workplace and didn't want to be a burden to the staff.

The careers that I researched were retail and flight attending.  I had taster days with Farmers Trading Company, Little Wonders (pre school) and Ballantynes.

I chose Ballantynes for my Gateway work placement, it was a new experience as I had never done anything like it before.  I worked in all the departments, helping out where I could.  Some of the things I have done are: learnt to have good customer service, answered the phones, unpacked lots of clothing, cleaned and mopped floors and windows, merchandising, replenished stock, tidying, restocking clothing sizes and pricing.

The ITO that I am registered with is Service IQ.  I have completed a qualification called a Customer Service Award and have learnt about product information, using safe work practices, participating in a team, personal presentation, customer service and a little bit about legislation.  I have gained 22 credits towards NCEA Level 2 and the credits also count towards a retail apprenticeship if I follow this path in the future.

I have enjoyed taster days and getting work experience and have learnt a lot.   I have gained a part time job with Ballantynes which is a great way to put my Gateway learning into practice.
