Gateway Profile - William Johnson
Builder
I decided to do Gateway this year because I thought it would be a good way to see what it is like to work in a real job. I did three taster days before I settled on my one day a week placement, my taster days were at Shore Construction, Scarlett Engineering and Steven Brown Building. I decided that engineering wasn’t what I wanted to do and that building is what I want to move into when I leave school. Each week I have been at my work placement I have been working on a new build house. I get to do things like putting up framing, concrete work, gibbing and any other jobs they need me to do. I work with the same guys every week and I enjoy being part of a team. At school I am working on Level 3 BCITO unit standards which are from the Building and Construction ITO, they are about things like health and safety, the tools I use, and different construction materials. These unit standards will count towards my building apprenticeship. When I leave school I would like to try and get an apprenticeship with my Gateway employer.
