End of Season Summary

Roncalli Seniors - 3rd grade

The seniors began the 2021/22 season in the newly formed 3rd grade competition and gelled immediately with both bat & ball.

The team played six games, they won five and lost one. There were plenty of notable achievements over these six games.

Bowling

Good bowling performances included:

  • Krishna Sridhar took two five wicket bags - 6/8 (TBHS) & 5/10 (P/Point)
  • Jack Cotter took a rare hat trick against Pleasant Point - 3/3
  • Alex Payne 4/32 - (Geraldine)
  • Sam Jones - 3/14 (TBHS)
  • Tyrone Hauraki - 3/12 (TBHS)

Batting

Toby Scannell led the way with the bat beginning the summer with 89 vs P/Point and then followed this up with a century against Geraldine. His 100 runs coming off only 74 balls.

The teams best batting performance was 294/6 vs P/Point.

  • Krishna - 50
  • Toby - 33
  • Matthew Cairns - 52
  • Jed McKerrow - 60
  • Alex Payne - 38
  • Darren MacKay - 20 not out

Another notable performance was Alex hitting 46 runs and taking his 4/32 against Geraldine.

Roncalli Seniors - 2nd grade

After Christmas Roncalli Cricket was boosted by the inclusion of a 2nd XI which gave Roncalli three afternoon grade teams, something that hadn't been achieved for a very long time.

The 2nd XI entered into the 3rd grade competition and the Roncalli Seniors were promoted to the 2nd grade competition.

With only four games left in the 2nd grade competition the team were gifted the perfect opportunity to showcase their skills and prove they were worthy of the promotion. It was a false start with the team travelling to Twizel to only complete the coin toss before the match was abandoned due to rain. Not all was lost as we enjoyed a nice pie in Fairlie and got the chance to catch some of the 2nd XI match vs Pleasant Point.

The team won the next three games. Firstly against Pleasant Point, batting first and scoring 142/10, the top scorer was Jed McKerrow with 47.

The fielding and the bowlers stepped up to win the match as they restricted Point to 135/9 from their 40 overs. Most notably Matthew Cairns 3/16, Billy McKerrow 3/16, Jack Cotter 1/29 and Krishna Sridhar 1/26.

I thought a game couldn't get much closer but the next one came right down to the second to last ball.  Against Waimate, Roncalli bowled first, the home team scored 172/10 (Matthew 3/22, Jack 2/17 & Jed 2/28). Roncalli got off to a good start with the bat losing the first wicket with 44 on the board. The loss of Toby (32) and Alex (20) then led to a quick flurry of wickets. At 115/7 Tyrone Hauraki (46 not out) and Jack Cotter (18) built a match winning partnership and got the team home with a ball to spare!

Now two from two, the final game was against TBHS. Roncalli bowled TBHS out for 125 - Krishna 3/25, Billy 3/15 & Matthew 2/19. The team ran down the total in the 19th over. Toby 66 and Tyrone 22 being the top scorers.

With their three wins the Roncalli Seniors ended up finishing 4th (out of 8) in the 2nd grade competition ahead of P/Point, Waimate, Celtic and TBHS.

Roncalli 1st XI

The firsts played two games.

First up against the TBHS 1st XI. Roncalli bowled first and had TBHS in serious trouble at 17/3. Unfortunately TBHS built a very solid fourth wicket 212 run partnership and ended up 270/5 off 50 overs. Roncalli were bowled out for 114 runs. Alex Payne top scoring with 33.

The team then played St Kevin's 1st XI in a 50 over match, we batted first and finished up 138/10 - Jed McKerrow 49 and Jack Cotter 27. St Kevin's batted well and chased down the target in the 38th over for the loss of five wickets. Krishna the best of the bowlers with 2/37.

These two games were a great opportunity to introduce some new players to 1st XI cricket with Ben Allan, Alexander Lawrence, Cameron King, Vinny Pratt and Harry Miller all making their debuts.

The depth of Roncalli 1st XI Cricket is building nicely with a number of talented cricketers coming up through the 2nd XI and Colts.

Congratulations to Mac Kelliher who was presented with his 20 game Roncalli baggy cap prior to the TBHS match.

Finally I would like to thank the Roncalli College Cricket committee for their ongoing support, governance and leadership. The Celtic Cricket Club for the use of the ground and training venue. Ants de Joux and Don McGartland for all the countless hours of ground preparation and all our supporters/parents for your ongoing support.

Jonts Mckerrow (First XI coach)

Roncalli Colts

“It has been a strange season for us. The weather has been the major feature with a number of games cancelled in February.

Since Christmas the Colts have only played three games with another called off after about an hour of play.

Of those three games we won one and lost two. The stand out was last Saturday when we played Pleasant Point and managed to score 175 after batting out 35 overs - the first time we have achieved that for a wee while.

We then bowled them out for 107 in 20 overs. A great team effort by the whole team with some stunning catches and run outs.

Great to have two Year 9 boys join the team this season and to see them enjoy their cricket.”

Darren McKay

It is with great sadness that the Roncalli First XI team lost one of their team mates, Darren McKay, who passed away suddenly on the 20th March.

Darren was an integral part of the First XI team over the last couple of seasons and played in the last three games.

“He epitomised what it meant to be a great team man. Having him in the team with his calming influence and a great sense of humour always provided us added confidence and a few laughs. A solid and dependable contributor to the team both on and off the field Aubs selflessly gave his time, effort and encouragement to ensure his team mates got the most out of their cricket.

He will forever hold great mana amongst the team.

On behalf of the entire Roncalli College Cricket community I wish to pass on our heartfelt condolences to his wife Nina and the family”
