Jordan Weaver - Glass Specialists

Marian Mehrtens —

Most of the time I am at Glass Specialists I will go out with one of the workers and go to a job site to install or replace glass that needs to be fixed

My thoughts on school before I started doing the gateway course were very bland, I had no idea what I was going to do when I left school. So I applied and was accepted into gateway. I researched careers and went on two taster days in joinery and glazing. I tried out Barrett Joinery and now I am currently at Glass Specialists. I chose my workplace in the glazing industry and have a placement with Glass Specialists out in Washdyke. My main job at the moment is to help out with anything that is needed in the workshop. I have a Gateway Learning Plan which includes doing unit standards towards NCEA and also towards an apprenticeship. I am registered with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO). The theory work I do in class at school is backed up with practical experience at Glass Specialists. I am assessed by my training adviser, he asks me questions about my theory booklets and he visits me in the workplace. The units count towards a future qualification with the glazing industry, this includes an apprenticeship. My plans for next year are to get the apprenticeship with glazing so I can learn more about the glazing industry.
