Careers Update

Lou Heenan —

Term three is shaping up to be a busy term for careers events.

Term three is normally a busy term in for careers events and activities, however this year it is set to be even busier because events that were scheduled for earlier in the year have now been added to this term.

Tertiary Institution Open Days

On 10 August around 80 Year 12 and 13 students visited Otago University and Polytechnic for their annual Open Day. This is a big day for the students as we leave Timaru at 6am and then the students get to spend the day exploring the campuses of each institution, attending lectures and visiting halls of residences. It is also a chance to catch up with ex students who are studying down in Dunedin and for them to let potential students know what it is really like to attend university or polytechnic.

We were due to attend the University of Canterbury Open day on Thursday 27 August, however due to the recent Covid 19 outbreak this has now be postponed until Saturday 19 September. This trip will now be an independent trip for students to undertake themselves, along with their parents if they chose to do so.

Other institutions like ARA are also hosting information sessions and these are advertised in the college notices.

KPMG Studylink Information Evening

On 18 August, KPMG hosted a Studylink Information evening for the senior students and parents. This evening was especially informative around what students are entitled to in terms of student allowances and loans and the presenters  also provided an insight into their university experiences as well. We are really grateful to KPMG for taking the time to come along and provide this valuable information about student loans and allowances to parents and students.

INZONE Careers Coach

On 17 September Roncalli College will be hosting the INZONE Careers Coach. This coach is set up so that students can visit kiosks within it and explore careers that might be of interest to them. Because of limited numbers at this stage this opportunity will be for Year 11 and 12 student only.

Due to COVID-19 some careers events have been cancelled but if a student is really keen to explore a potential career then please do not hesitate to contact me as there are opportunities that arise all the time and if I know a student is interested in a particular field then we can try and arrange things like taster days or work experience etc.

Job of the Month

This month we’re exploring biochemist. Demand for biochemists is high in the health and biotechnology sectors due to global demand for:

  • new health products
  • solutions to environmental problems.

If a student is observant, creative and good at problem solving, a career as a biochemist could be for them.
