Sophie Bennet performs with the NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra

Nikki Hall —

Sophie Bennet, cellist and violinist, was selected last year after a rigorous audition process with cello to prepare and perform with this national ensemble during the Term 1 holidays.

The orchestra, under renowned German conductor Uwe Grodd, performed Kabalevsky’s “Overture to ‘Colas Breugnon’, Op. 24”, Séjourné’s “Concerto for Marimba & String Orchestra”, and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1”.

It was an inspiring week full of intensive rehearsals and making new friends across New Zealand. Sophie enjoyed the opportunity to play difficult and challenging repertoire, especially the full Mahler Symphony, and to work with Maestro Uwe Grodd. The final performance on 27 April in the Charles Luney Auditorium was well received, and was a culmination of hard work and a strong passion for music by all.
